Peggy Lipton, ‘Mod Squad’ star and mother of Rashida Jones, dead at 72
Peggy Lipton, the New York-born model and actress who rocketed to fame as sexy and smart undercover officer Julie Barnes on the hit series “The Mod Squad,” has died.
Lipton married music producer Quincy Jones in 1974, the year after ABC canceled “The Mod Squad.” The union produced two daughters, actress and screenwriter Rashida Jones and Kidada Jones, a fashion designer and model.
“The Mod Squad” was one of the first TV series to deal with late 1960s U.S. counterculture. It ran for five seasons and netted Lipton four Emmy Award nominations, and a Golden Globe award for best actress in a TV drama in 1971.
After taking an extensive break to raise her daughters, Lipton returned to acting and garnered newfound fame in 1990 after being cast as diner owner Norma Jennings on the cult series “Twin Peaks.
Just 15 when she began her modeling career, Lipton was still in her teens when she made her TV debut on “The John Forsythe Show.” She also appeared on on “Bewitched” and “The Virginian” before landing her role “The Mod Squad.”
“She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side,” said Rashida and Kidada Jones in a joint statement. “We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her.”
